Edwin Lindbloom Letters
9 December 1944
11:07 a.m.

Dear Mardean:
Your gentle rebuke should teach me a lesson on not to use dates in my correspondence but since I want to prove I can do much better under the proper conditions I’ll continue with my usual style. I’ll have to admit that you are unusually alert in observing things of a chronological nature.
It seems as though your numerous activities for one day is stupendous---Your getting to bed at 1:30 a.m. sounds beyond propitious, my bedtime is around 10:00 p.m. and if any later than that I’m a “walking zombie”. I have to admire your physical and mental prowess in view of the fact you stayed up to compose me a delightsome letter.

I left Galesburg on the 28th and spent a few days in Chicago. I left there on the 1st of December. My train, the “Dixie Flyer” traveled thru Illinois going south and continuing thru Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. My first trip south of the “Mason-Dixon Line”. I can tell you I was all eyes and ears, an education to say the least. We stopped an appropriate length of time in Atlanta, Ga. and also at Jacksonville, Fla. I was simply thrilled. Speaking again of your “honeymoon” – Pardon Me?- This place Miami Beach is even better than Hawaii at least my first impression points that way. The landscaping and waterways thru the different Islands are wonderful beyond description. Did you know that the Miami Beach area is made up of 22 man-made Islands? Lots of Millionaires reside here in almost heavenly fashion. Heaven on Earth as it were. Swimming, fishing, Golf, Tennis and etc are the routine of the day. It seems so funny that up North cold and snow is abundant while sunshine and gentle breezes prevail here. Have you done any traveling in California or Florida yet? It is certainly wonderful. Speaking of pictures, I’m taking more of them while down here. I couldn’t get any Technicolor film – only Black and white. Say! I wonder if your part of the United States would have any color film for an 8 millimeter movie camera. I tried at home and in Chicago and down here and no soap? When you go shopping again are you near Logan? Would you mind just seeing if they have any and the price and then let me know. I’ll always be much indebted to you. My paper doll cutting days are over I hope so if you please I’ll stick with picture taking. Who knows I might become famous in the film industry.
Let me know how the debate came out? Did your interpretation of the stars subdue the fish and mules?
My shorthand was a means to an end. I like it as an avocation rather than a vocation or a living. I think achievement in that line can be best relegated to the dim and distant past.
In the Hawaiian language there are many beautiful phrases which only can best be expressed in their terms. Many of our phrases and sayings cannot be termed correctly with their words.
How would you go about finding out anything about the Hawaiian language? I mean enough for a simple phrase? Of course a curious person is almost apt to uncover a lot of things if they make up their mind. Remember what happened to the cat that was too curious??
I am waiting for my reassignment. It’s a long chance and a bare possibility that I might go to California. If I do I might be able to stop off in Utah for a day or so. I don’t have a map of Zion handy but where are you from the center of population? My train will probably go thru Ogden. Gee it would be swell if you could get a day off for the occasion.
Pardon the scribbling. I’m writing fast and furious on a magazine. Be real good and write soon.
Lots of Love
Edwin.
