March 10, 1933
On this day I celibrated my 22nd birthday. And received a call from Predient A.W. Ivins to go on a mission to the California Mission. Received instructions to report to the mission home in Salt Lake city on april 24, 1933.
Left Galesburg april 29, 1933 on the Burlington route and arrived in Denver in a snow storm. Left Denver on the D &R.G.W. arrived in Salt Lake Sunday morning 8:00 a.m. Reported mission home and later attended the 18th ward and was called as for my first talk. attended Tabernacle and heard Jos. P. McMurray. Attented evening services and heard Bro. Ballard. April 24/33 General talk by President Taylor, class instructor Elder McKay and Elder S.E. Young.

April 28/33 Went thru the Temple in S.L.C. and received my ordination to the Priesthood and Endowment. Was ordained an Elder by Bro. Edward J. Gardner.

The interesting thing about this is, the people who instructed the missionaries. The Prophet, Pres. Grant ;two future Prophets, Joseph Fielding Smith and David O. McKay and 3 other members of the Quorum of the Twelve, Levi Edgar Young, Melvin Ballard and Joseph F. Merrill; and the YW's General President, Sister Fox who wrote the great song: "Carry On" What a prestigous list of instructors. Also A.w. Ivins whom he lists as the one who called him to go on a mission was the First Councilor to President Grant.
It is also very interesting to see the list of subject that they were instructed in. I would have loved to hear the lesson on Social Behavior.
